As a result, when a golden opportunity to acquire a large amount of high-quality hardwood turning machinery became available, we grabbed the opportunity.
The machinery was for making tool handles. Handles such as axe handles, hammer handles, hoe handles, shovel handles, fern hooks and more. In short, this is a great opportunity to utilise our existing operation and create a fantastic business and skills synergy.
Cattle Dog Tool Handles is Born
Coffs Harbour Hardwoods is owned and operated by the McCarthy family. For many generations, they’ve been involved in wood chopping, including founder Ray McCarthy who was a world champion. The ability to produce hardwood products, especially an axe, seemed a natural fit. So, we purchased the machinery and built a home for it at our Glenreagh production facility.
Why Cattle Dog? We wanted to name these products after something or someone that reflected the nature of what the product was; a good little reliable companion that didn’t stop. What Australian icon represented that more than the cattle dog? The cattle dog was bred for driving cattle over long distance and rough terrain. Perfect.
